How to Win Your First Government Tender — Step by Step
Government tenders have a reputation for being complicated. That reputation is partly earned — but it's also used by gatekeepers to keep small businesses out. Here's the real process, demystified.
Step 1: Get Registered on CSD
The Central Supplier Database (csd.gov.za) is where every government department finds suppliers. Without a CSD number, you cannot bid on any tender. Registration is free and takes 2–5 business days.
What you need: Company registration number (CIPC), tax clearance certificate (SARS), bank account in the company name, contact details.
Step 2: Find Tenders
The official portal is etenders.gov.za. Check it daily — tenders are posted throughout the week and some have short windows (as little as 14 days).
Step 3: Evaluate Before You Bid
- Do I meet all mandatory requirements? (BBBEE level, turnover, experience)
- Can I realistically deliver on time and on budget?
- Are the payment terms workable? (Government often pays 30–60 days after invoice)
Step 4: Write a Compliant Bid
- Complete every form exactly as instructed
- Attach all required documents in the specified order
- Sign and date every page that requires it
- Submit before the deadline — late submissions are never accepted
