5 WhatsApp Sales Scripts That Actually Close in South Africa

Person using WhatsApp on a smartphone for business

Most South African entrepreneurs lose sales not because their product is bad, but because their follow-up messages are weak. Here are 5 scripts that work — tested in real township markets and online businesses.

Script 1: The First Contact (Cold Lead)

Hi [Name] I'm [Your Name] from [Business]. I saw you were looking for [product/service].

We help [type of customer] with [specific result]. For example, last month we helped a client in [city] save R2,000 on [problem].

Can I send you 3 photos and a price list? Takes 2 minutes to look at. No obligation.

Why it works: You lead with a result, not a product. You ask for micro-commitment (2 minutes), not a purchase.

Script 2: Following Up After No Reply (3 Days Later)

Hey [Name] — following up on my message from Monday.

I know you're busy, so I'll keep it short: we still have stock / availability. But I'm closing my books for new clients this Friday.

If timing isn't right, no problem at all — just let me know and I won't follow up again

lightbulb Key insight
Giving them permission to say no actually makes them more likely to say yes. It removes pressure and builds trust.

Script 3: Handling "It's Too Expensive"

I totally understand — budget is real. Can I ask: what were you expecting to pay?

Okay, so the difference is R[X]. Here's what that covers: [list 3 specific benefits]. For most clients, they make that back within [timeframe].

Would it help if I split it into two payments?

Script 4: Asking for a Referral

Hi [Name]! Hope the [product/service] is working well for you

Quick favour — do you know anyone who might need what we do? Even one name would mean a lot.

I'll give them the same quality service you got, and I'll give you R[X] as a thank you when they order.

Script 5: Re-engaging a Dead Lead (90+ Days)

Hey [Name] — it's been a while! Hope all is well.

I'm not going to try and sell you anything — I just wanted to share something useful: [genuinely helpful tip].

If things are different now and you want to chat, I'm around. If not, take care!
